Detailed 4-Day Uganda Gorilla Trekking Itinerary

Day 1: Entebbe or Kampala to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

Your private Uganda gorilla safari begins with an early pickup from Entebbe or Kampala. Meet your English-speaking driver-guide and travel southwest through Uganda’s fertile countryside, passing small towns, farms and rolling hills. Stop at the Uganda Equator for photographs before continuing towards Mbarara, where you will have lunch. The afternoon journey takes you deeper into southwestern Uganda and through increasingly mountainous scenery. You will arrive at your lodge near Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in the evening. After checking in, enjoy dinner and a briefing about the following day’s gorilla trek, including the recommended clothing, expected trail conditions and departure time.

Accommodation: Selected budget, mid or luxury lodge near your confirmed trekking sector
Meals: Lunch and dinner
Drive time: Approximately 8–9 hours, excluding stops
Main activity: Scenic transfer from Entebbe or Kampala to Bwindi

The main experience takes place in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and an important habitat for endangered mountain gorillas.

Day 2: Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

After an early breakfast, collect your packed lunch and transfer to the appropriate Bwindi park headquarters. Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers will register participants, explain trekking rules and allocate visitors to a habituated gorilla family. Accompanied by experienced trackers, enter the rainforest and follow trails through dense vegetation and hilly terrain. The trek may take between two and six hours or longer, depending on the gorillas’ location. Once the family is found, you may spend up to one hour quietly observing and photographing the gorillas. Afterwards, return through the forest and transfer to your lodge for a hot shower, dinner and a relaxing evening.

Accommodation: Same lodge as Day 1
Meals: Breakfast, packed lunch and dinner
Trekking time: Approximately 2–6 hours or longer
Main activity: Guided mountain gorilla trekking with one permit included

Day 3: Bwindi Community and Cultural Experience

Enjoy a more relaxed morning after your gorilla trek. Following breakfast, join a guided community experience near Bwindi and learn how local families live alongside the protected rainforest. Depending on the confirmed trekking sector, the visit may include a village walk, traditional craft demonstration, local farming experience or cultural performance. Your guide will explain how tourism and conservation support livelihoods around Bwindi. Return to the lodge for lunch and spend the afternoon relaxing while enjoying the surrounding forest or hillside views. This community experience is included as the day’s standard activity. A Batwa cultural experience, Lake Bunyonyi excursion, guided forest walk or second gorilla trek can be arranged instead at an additional cost.

Accommodation: Same lodge as Day 1
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Activity time: Approximately 2–3 hours
Main activity: Guided Bwindi community and cultural experience

Day 4: Bwindi to Entebbe or Kampala

After breakfast, check out and begin the return journey to Entebbe or Kampala. Travel through southwestern Uganda’s terraced hills, rural communities and farming areas, with comfort and photography stops along the way. Stop for lunch in Mbarara or another suitable town before continuing towards central Uganda. Arrival in Kampala or Entebbe is expected during the late afternoon or evening, depending on traffic, weather and road conditions. Your driver-guide will drop you at your hotel or Entebbe International Airport. If you are flying internationally that evening, book a late-night departure and allow sufficient time for possible road delays. A scheduled flight from Kihihi to Entebbe can be arranged as an optional upgrade.

Accommodation: Not included; available upon request
Meals: Breakfast and lunch
Drive time: Approximately 8–9 hours, excluding stops
Main activity: Return transfer to Kampala or Entebbe

Scheduled Flight or Private Charter?

A scheduled domestic flight operates at published departure times and may carry other passengers. It is normally the most cost-effective fly-in option. Baggage allowances are limited, and soft-sided luggage is recommended.

A private charter provides an aircraft exclusively for your party and may offer greater timing flexibility. Charter costs depend on the aircraft, route, number of passengers and availability, so they must be quoted individually.

The fly-in option still requires a private road transfer between Kihihi Airstrip and your lodge in Bwindi. Depending on the confirmed trekking sector and road conditions, this transfer generally takes approximately 1.5–3 hours.

Gorilla Permit and Booking Conditions

One Uganda gorilla trekking permit is included for each eligible traveller, subject to availability. It allows a ranger-led trek and up to one hour with a habituated gorilla family.

To reserve your permit, provide a copy of your passport biodata page and your preferred trekking date. Your passport details must match the permit, and you should carry the original passport on trekking day.

Trekking takes place in Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga or Nkuringo. Your sector and nearby accommodation are confirmed according to permit availability. The minimum trekking age is 15 years.

Your safari is confirmed after permit and accommodation availability has been checked, the required payment received and written confirmation issued. Gorilla permits are generally non-refundable once purchased. Changes remain subject to Uganda Wildlife Authority rules, availability and possible charges. Comprehensive travel insurance is strongly recommended.

Read our Uganda gorilla permit guide for more information about availability, minimum age, required passport details and booking conditions.

Fitness, Health and Packing Information

Gorilla trekking can be moderately to physically demanding, with steep slopes, dense vegetation and muddy or slippery trails. Treks commonly last two to six hours or longer. Reasonable fitness, mobility and balance are recommended. Porters can be hired to carry your daypack and assist on difficult sections.

For the gorillas’ protection, visitors with a fever, flu, persistent cough or another infectious illness may not be allowed to trek. Consult a travel-health professional about vaccinations, malaria prevention and personal medical needs before visiting Uganda.

What to Wear and Carry

  • Waterproof hiking boots
  • Long trousers and long-sleeved shirt
  • Rain jacket or poncho
  • Gardening or trekking gloves
  • Long socks and a warm layer
  • Small waterproof daypack
  • Drinking water and packed lunch
  • Insect repellent and sunscreen
  • Personal medication
  • Original passport
  • Camera with spare battery
  • Cash for a porter and gratuities

During the gorilla encounter, follow your ranger’s instructions, maintain the required distance, remain quiet and never touch the gorillas. Flash photography, eating and drinking near the gorillas are prohibited.

Best Time for Uganda Gorilla Trekking

Gorilla trekking in Bwindi is available throughout the year. The drier periods—June to September and December to February—generally offer firmer trails and more comfortable hiking conditions. These are also popular travel months, so permits and accommodation should be reserved early.

The wetter months—March to May and October to November—bring heavier rainfall and muddier trails but offer lush scenery, excellent photography and fewer visitors. Rain can occur at any time in Bwindi because it is a tropical rainforest.

Trail conditions change throughout the year. Read about the best time for gorilla trekking in Uganda before choosing your travel dates.

Optional Safari Extensions

Extend your gorilla trekking tour with one of these experiences:

  • Lake Bunyonyi: Add one or two nights for canoeing, relaxation and beautiful island views.
  • Queen Elizabeth National Park: Enjoy game drives, a Kazinga Channel boat safari and opportunities to see elephants, lions and hippos.
  • Kibale Forest: Track chimpanzees and explore one of Uganda’s most important primate habitats.
  • Second gorilla trek: Visit another gorilla family, subject to additional permit availability and payment.
  • Rwanda extension: Continue to Kigali or Volcanoes National Park for cultural and wildlife experiences.
  • Kenya or Tanzania safari: Combine Uganda’s gorillas with the Masai Mara, Serengeti or Ngorongoro Crater.
  • Zanzibar beach holiday: Finish your East African adventure with a relaxing Indian Ocean stay.

Guide Expert Insight

Gorilla trekking conditions in Bwindi vary according to the weather, terrain and location of the assigned gorilla family. Staying near your confirmed trekking sector is essential because Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga and Nkuringo are separated by lengthy, sometimes difficult roads.

Wear waterproof hiking boots, long trousers and gloves, even during the drier months. Hiring a porter is also worthwhile: they carry your daypack, assist on slippery sections and directly support the surrounding community.

Reserve your permit early, especially when travelling from June to September or December to February. Most importantly, approach the trek patiently—the time needed to locate the gorillas cannot be guaranteed, but the eventual encounter is well worth the effort.
