Lake Ndutu

Lake Ndutu is a seasonal soda lake at the south of Serengeti Plain, at the head of Olduvai Gorge, the lake set in beautiful acacia woodland, with the mighty backdrop of the Ngorongoro Crater highlands. Ndutu had been a favorite destination for many distinguished authors, filmmakers, wildlife biologists and researchers
History: The area consists of Olduvai Gorgeon on the western shoreline of Lake Ndutu, an archaeological site where the initial fossils were discovered that remains the most significant pre-historic landmarks on the entire planet today.
The Ndutu skull is the partial cranium of a Middle Pleistocene hominid found at Lake Ndutu which attests man’s origin to be from this region. According to the archaeologists, they estimate that some of the hominid species remains date up to more than 3 million years back in time. The Ndutu skull seemed to form a link between Homo erectus and archaic Homo sapiens, due to it having certain features in common with both. Stone Age tools found at the site included a hand ax, but most of the artifacts were nondescript cores, hammers, tones, and flakes tools; discovered there in 1973.
Wildlife: The plains of Ndutu are populated by huge herds of wildebeest, zebra and antelope. Small-Spotted Genet, Elephant, Giraffe, Eagle Owl, Striped Hyena, elephant, and all the six cats– lion, leopard, cheetah, caracal, serval and African wildcat.
