Mount Meru
Location: The Mountain is the third highest peak in Africa and is the second highest mountain in Tanzania at 4,568m after Mount Kilimanjaro. It is located is located just north of the city of Arusha, within Arusha National Park, Tanzania’s gem.
Mt. Meru is a dormant stratovolcano, situated roughly 70 kilometers (43 mi) west of Mount Kilimanjaro and East of the Great Rift Valley
Wildlife: Lying within Arusha National Park, the lower reaches of Mount Meru are amazingly rich in wildlife with over 400 species. You are almost certain to see monkeys, warthogs, buffaloes and a wide array of birds, elephants and giraffes, blue monkey and black-and-white colobus, shy red duiker, smaller Kirk’s dik-dik, zebras and Giraffe. Colorful turacos and trogons, flamingos, and Egyptian geese are some of the diverse fowl you might spot while visiting. Lion and rhino are absent.
Climate: The Dry season is from June to September, Temperatures in the afternoon are generally around 19°C/66°F. Expect cold nights with temperatures around 9°C/48°F at a minimum. There are two Wet seasons: the ‘long rains’ (March to May) and the ‘short rains’ (November to December). Temperatures in the afternoon are generally around 23°C/73F°, while temperatures at night are around 11°C/52°F
Activities: climbing tour up Mount Meru, camping, mountain biking in the foothills of Mount Meru, boat riding, visiting Maasai Villages, fishing in the foothills of Mount Meru and camel safari.
