Detailed 4-Day Serengeti & Ngorongoro Safari Itinerary

Day 1: Arusha to Serengeti National Park – Afternoon Game Drive

Tanzania Safari Tour Package

Your safari begins with pickup from your Arusha accommodation and a briefing from your safari guide. Depart in a shared 4×4 safari Land Cruiser, travelling through northern Tanzania and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area towards Serengeti National Park. This is a substantial travel day, with approximately seven to eight hours on the road, depending on road conditions, entry formalities and stops.

Enjoy a packed lunch along the journey before continuing into the Serengeti. Once inside the park, begin your afternoon game drive as you make your way towards Seronera. Watch for giraffes, zebras, antelopes, elephants and predators across the open plains. Game-viewing time depends on your arrival at the park.

Arrive at Seronera Campsite, where your tent will already be erected. Settle in, enjoy dinner and spend your first night in the Serengeti.

Pickup: Arusha accommodation; exact time confirmed before departure
Road transfer: Approximately 7–8 hours
Activity: Afternoon game drive, subject to arrival time
Accommodation: Seronera Campsite
Meals: Lunch and dinner

Day 2: Full-Day Game Drives in Serengeti National Park

Wake to the sounds of the Serengeti and enjoy breakfast before setting out for a full day of wildlife exploration. With another night at Seronera Campsite, today is dedicated to game viewing without a transfer to your next destination.

Your guide selects the route according to wildlife activity and local conditions. Explore grasslands, river valleys and rocky outcrops while searching for lions, elephants, buffaloes, giraffes and a variety of antelope. Leopards and cheetahs may also be encountered, although all wildlife sightings depend on nature.

Carry a packed lunch to enjoy at a designated picnic area, allowing you to continue exploring during the day. Take time to observe animal behaviour, photograph the landscapes and learn about the Serengeti ecosystem from your guide. Return to camp later in the afternoon for dinner and your second night beneath the Serengeti sky.

Departure: Morning; timing agreed with your guide
Activity: Full-day Serengeti game drives with a picnic lunch
Accommodation: Seronera Campsite
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 3: Morning Serengeti Game Drive – Ngorongoro Simba Campsite

7 Days Tanzania Tour
7 Days Tanzania Tour

Enjoy breakfast before heading out for your final morning game drive in Serengeti National Park. The morning offers another opportunity to explore the Seronera area, watching for predators, grazing herds and wildlife gathering near water. Your guide adapts the route to recent sightings while allowing sufficient time for the onward journey.

After your morning exploration, enjoy lunch before departing the Serengeti and travelling towards the Ngorongoro highlands. Watch the scenery change from open plains to cooler, greener surroundings as you approach your overnight destination.

Arrive at Ngorongoro Simba Campsite, where your tent will be ready for you. Settle in and enjoy dinner before an early night ahead of tomorrow’s crater visit. Keep a warm layer handy: evenings at the campsite can feel considerably cooler than those in the Serengeti.

Activity: Morning Serengeti game drive followed by transfer to Ngorongoro
Transfer: Afternoon journey; duration depends on your game-drive location and road conditions
Accommodation: Ngorongoro Simba Campsite
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 4: Ngorongoro Crater Game Drive – Return to Arusha

After an early breakfast, leave camp and descend into Ngorongoro Crater for your final safari adventure. Your crater visit is planned for approximately 7:00 am to 2:00 pm, including wildlife viewing and a picnic lunch.

Explore the crater’s grasslands, wetlands and woodland with your guide, searching for lions, buffaloes, zebras, wildebeest and other resident wildlife. Watch for hippos around the pools and, with luck, the endangered black rhinoceros. Your guide will explain how the different habitats support wildlife within this remarkable volcanic landscape.

Enjoy your packed lunch at a designated picnic site before completing your game drive and ascending from the crater. Continue by road to Arusha, where you will be dropped at your accommodation. Arrival is expected in the late afternoon or early evening, depending on traffic, road conditions and the time taken to exit the conservation area.

Crater visit: Approximately 7:00 am–2:00 pm, including a picnic lunch
Return transfer: Ngorongoro to Arusha
Drop-off: Arusha accommodation; late afternoon or early evening
Meals: Breakfast and lunch

How the Shared Group Safari Works

Shared Safari Vehicle and Window Seats

Travel in a 4×4 safari Land Cruiser with a pop-up roof, sharing the vehicle and guide with other travellers. Vehicles accommodate six to seven safari guests, depending on their seating configuration, with a window seat guaranteed for each guest.

The group follows the same scheduled route, game drives and departure times. Your guide coordinates stops and wildlife viewing while considering the interests of the whole group.

Joining Your Shared Safari

Solo travellers, couples and friends can book this shared safari from Arusha. See Departure Dates and Solo Travellers below for the daily departure schedule, minimum operating requirements and solo-tent arrangements.

Pickup and Return Arrangements

We collect you from your Arusha accommodation on Day 1 and return you to your Arusha accommodation on Day 4. Your exact pickup time is confirmed before departure. When guests are staying at different properties, pickups may take place in sequence.

Airport transfers and stays before or after the safari can be arranged separately.

Luggage and Personal Belongings

Luggage space is shared between guests and camping supplies. Bring a compact, soft-sided travel bag and a small daypack for your camera, valuables, sun protection and other essentials. Advise us before departure if you are travelling with large suitcases so storage arrangements can be discussed.

Accommodation Within the Group

The advertised USD 1,090 per-person package covers camping accommodation at Seronera and Ngorongoro Simba campsites.

On departures combining camping and lodge guests, travellers share the safari vehicle and game drives, then stay at their separately booked accommodation. Your guide coordinates accommodation drop-offs and pickups, which may involve short additional transfers. Any lodge arrangement must be agreed and priced separately before booking.

Best Time for This Serengeti & Ngorongoro Safari

This safari operates year-round. June to October generally offers drier conditions, while the greener months bring changing landscapes and more variable weather. Short rains usually occur in November–December, with the longer rainy period from March to May. Rainfall varies from year to year. Tanzania

Travel period Typical conditions Wildlife-viewing focus Camping and travel considerations
January–February Warm days, with a possible drier interval between rainy periods Explore central Serengeti and the crater’s resident wildlife Pack sun protection, warm evening layers and a light rain jacket
March–May Long-rain season; greener surroundings and potentially muddy tracks Wildlife viewing continues, with routes adapted to conditions Waterproof luggage protection and shoes with good grip are useful
June–October Generally drier weather; cool mornings and evenings Clearer vegetation can help wildlife spotting Bring warm layers for early drives and protection against dust
November–December Short rains, often with showers between brighter periods Enjoy green scenery and wildlife viewing along the scheduled route Keep a rain jacket and waterproof bag cover accessible

The seasonal weather patterns above are typical rather than forecasts.

This is a central Serengeti and Ngorongoro safari, rather than a dedicated migration-tracking itinerary. Migration sightings depend on herd movements and whether they are within reach of the scheduled route. River crossings, calving activity and specific animal sightings are not guaranteed.

The starting price remains USD 1,090 per person throughout 2027 and 2028, regardless of season.

Washrooms and Campsite Facilities

Seronera and Ngorongoro Simba campsites have shared toilets and showers. Bathrooms are separate from your tent, so keep your head torch and shower footwear accessible. Hot water and charging facilities may be limited.

During transfers and game drives, tell your guide when you need a washroom stop so they can arrange a suitable designated stopping place.

Meals and Dietary Requests

Tell us about vegetarian or vegan preferences, food allergies and other dietary requirements when booking. This allows the team to plan supplies before leaving Arusha. Guests with severe allergies should discuss their needs with us before confirming so we can explain what the shared camping kitchen can accommodate.

Camping Comfort and Wildlife Awareness

Keep your tent zipped, avoid storing food inside it and follow your guide’s instructions around camp. After dark, use your torch and ask the crew for assistance if needed. Warm sleepwear will help you stay comfortable during the cooler Ngorongoro night.

Arrival and Onward Travel

Plan to be in Arusha before the safari departure morning. Your pickup time will be confirmed before travel. If you wish to fly out on Day 4, discuss the flight with us before booking it, allowing for the crater visit, return drive and airport transfer.

Safari Guide & Expert Insights

Make the Most of Your Full Serengeti Day

Your second day has no transfer to another park, giving your guide more time to explore wildlife areas. Share your interests at the briefing—whether big cats, birds or photography—so they can consider these alongside the group’s interests and current sightings.

Keep Essentials With You

On game drives, carry your camera, sun protection, warm layer and any personal medication in a small daypack. Your main luggage will be packed away, so keep anything you need during the day within reach.

Prepare for a Cooler Ngorongoro Night

Pack a fleece or warm jacket and comfortable sleepwear for Ngorongoro Simba Campsite. Keep your head torch accessible for moving between your tent and the shared bathrooms after dark.

Let Your Guide Adapt Wildlife Viewing

Animal movements and road conditions influence each game drive. Allowing your guide to adjust the viewing route can create better opportunities than following a rigid list of sightings. Wildlife encounters remain unpredictable.

Be Ready for the Early Crater Departure

Organise your belongings the evening before your crater visit. Being ready promptly helps the group make the most of its planned morning descent and viewing time before returning to Arusha.

Follow the Campsite Briefing

Ask the crew about bathroom access, meal times and movement around camp. Keep your tent zipped, avoid storing food inside and follow the team’s instructions whenever wildlife is nearby.
