6 Days Masai Mara, Lake Nakuru & Amboseli Safari Overview

Discover three contrasting wildlife destinations on this 6 days Masai Mara, Lake Nakuru and Amboseli safari, starting and ending in Nairobi. This private road itinerary combines open savannah, Rift Valley lake scenery and elephant-rich plains, offering a varied introduction to Kenya within six days.

Begin with two nights in the Masai Mara, where a full day of game viewing gives you time to explore different habitats with your guide. Search for lions, elephants, buffaloes, giraffes and other plains wildlife. During the migration period, visiting wildebeest herds may add to the experience, although their movements and river crossings remain unpredictable.

Continue to Lake Nakuru National Park for one night, adding opportunities to look for black and white rhinos, enjoy birdlife and explore the park’s wooded landscapes. Flamingo numbers vary, so the visit focuses on the wider wildlife experience.

Your final two nights in Amboseli include a full day to discover its elephant herds, wetlands and open plains. Early game drives also offer opportunities to see Mount Kilimanjaro when clouds and weather conditions allow.

Throughout the journey, travel in a private 4×4 Land Cruiser with your own professional safari guide. The pace of game drives can accommodate your interests within the itinerary and park opening hours. Several days involve substantial road travel, balanced with dedicated wildlife-viewing time in the Mara and Amboseli. Accommodation, meal plans and all price inclusions are clearly confirmed in your quotation before booking.

Why Choose This Safari?

  • Three contrasting wildlife destinations: Combine the Masai Mara’s open plains, Lake Nakuru’s rhino-viewing opportunities and Amboseli’s elephant herds in one journey.
  • Private vehicle and guide: Travel exclusively with your own party in a private 4×4 Land Cruiser, with game drives planned around your interests and available time.
  • Full safari days in both Mara and Amboseli: Two nights in each destination allow a dedicated day of wildlife viewing without an inter-park transfer.
  • Named accommodation and transparent arrangements: Receive a quotation identifying your lodges, room arrangements, meals, transport and inclusions before confirming your booking.

Detailed 6-Day Safari Itinerary

Day 1: Nairobi → Masai Mara National Reserve

Approximate road time: 6–7 hours · Planned departure: Around 6:30 AM · Lunch: At the lodge if arrival permits; otherwise arranged en route · Game drive: Afternoon outing, subject to arrival time.

Your safari begins with an early pickup from your Nairobi hotel or an agreed meeting point. Meet your professional safari driver-guide for a briefing before travelling towards the Masai Mara through the Great Rift Valley. A viewpoint stop may be included where conditions and timing allow.

This is a substantial road journey, with comfort stops along the way. Lunch arrangements depend on your departure time and arrival at the lodge and will be confirmed before travel.

After checking in, head out for an afternoon game drive if arrival time permits. Explore the Mara’s grasslands in search of elephants, giraffes, buffaloes, zebras and predators. Your guide selects the route according to wildlife activity and the time available.

Return to your lodge for dinner and your first night in the Masai Mara.

Proposed Accommodation: Mara Serena Safari Lodge
Meals: Lunch and dinner
Main Activity: Afternoon game drive, subject to arrival time

Day 2: Full Day in the Masai Mara

Spend today exploring the Masai Mara without an inter-park transfer. Following breakfast, set out with your guide for a full-day game drive with a picnic lunch, or arrange morning and afternoon drives with lunch at the lodge.

Search for lions, cheetahs, elephants and other wildlife across the reserve’s varied habitats. Your guide considers recent sightings, road conditions and your interests when planning the day. Allow time to observe animal behaviour and enjoy the landscapes rather than simply moving between sightings.

During the migration period, game drives may focus on areas occupied by visiting wildebeest and zebra herds. A river-area excursion depends on wildlife movements, accessibility and the distance from your accommodation; crossings cannot be promised.

An optional balloon safari can be arranged in advance at an additional cost, subject to availability and weather. Your remaining game-drive arrangements will be adjusted accordingly.

Proposed Accommodation: Mara Serena Safari Lodge
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Main Activity: Full-day game drive or morning and afternoon game drives

Day 3: Masai Mara → Lake Nakuru National Park

Approximate road time: 5–6 hours · Planned departure: Around 7:00 AM, after breakfast · Lunch: At the lodge or packed lunch, depending on timing · Game drive: Lake Nakuru afternoon outing, subject to arrival time.

After breakfast, depart for Lake Nakuru. Today combines an overland transfer with wildlife viewing, so departure and lunch arrangements are planned to preserve time for your visit to the park.

On arrival, enjoy a game drive through Lake Nakuru’s grasslands and wooded habitats. Look for black and white rhinos, buffaloes, giraffes, antelopes and birdlife. Lions and leopards may also be encountered, although sightings depend on natural conditions.

Your guide may include a scenic viewpoint where access and timing permit. Flamingos are a possible sighting, but their numbers vary; rhino viewing, other wildlife and the Rift Valley setting are the main focus.

Continue to your accommodation for dinner and an overnight stay. An additional morning Mara game drive should be agreed in advance because it would reduce the time available at Nakuru.

Proposed Accommodation: The Cliff, Lake Nakuru
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Main Activity: Lake Nakuru game drive, subject to arrival time

Day 4: Lake Nakuru → Amboseli National Park

Approximate road time: 7–9 hours · Planned departure: Around 6:30 AM, following an early breakfast · Lunch: Arranged en route · Game drive: A short afternoon outing only if arrival permits.

Today is primarily a travel day. Leave Lake Nakuru early and journey towards Amboseli with comfort stops for refreshments, toilets and stretching, plus a lunch stop along the route. Traffic and road conditions may extend the journey, so an afternoon game drive is not assured.

On arrival, settle into Amboseli Serena Safari Lodge. If sufficient time remains before park closing, enjoy a short introductory game drive; otherwise, relax ahead of tomorrow’s full wildlife-viewing day.

For families who prefer shorter travel days, ask us about a revised seven-day itinerary with an overnight stop along the route. Simply adding another night in Amboseli provides more safari time but does not shorten this transfer.

Proposed Accommodation: Amboseli Serena Safari Lodge
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Main Activity: Road transfer; afternoon game drive only if time permits

Day 5: Full Day in Amboseli National Park

Begin with an early game drive, taking advantage of the cooler morning conditions. When the weather allows, Mount Kilimanjaro provides a striking backdrop to Amboseli’s plains.

Explore the park’s wetlands and grasslands in search of elephant herds, buffaloes, zebras, giraffes and other wildlife. Spend time watching elephants feed, move between habitats and interact within their family groups.

Choose a full-day outing with a picnic lunch or morning and afternoon game drives with a midday break at the lodge. Your guide will discuss the most suitable arrangement for your interests and the conditions.

A viewpoint stop may be included where access permits. An optional Maasai community visit can also be arranged at an additional cost, with permission requested before photographing people.

Return to the lodge for dinner and your final safari night.

Proposed Accommodation: Amboseli Serena Safari Lodge
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Main Activity: Full-day game drive or morning and afternoon game drives

Day 6: Amboseli → Nairobi

Approximate road time: 4–5 hours · Planned departure: Around 9:00–10:00 AM, adjusted to your onward arrangements · Lunch: Arranged en route · Game drive: A short early outing if your departure schedule permits.

Share your onward flight details before booking. An airport drop-off, traffic delays and check-in requirements must be considered when planning your return. An earlier departure from Amboseli may require shortening or omitting the morning game drive.

Enjoy breakfast and, if your onward arrangements allow, a final early game drive in Amboseli. This offers another opportunity to observe wildlife before beginning the return journey to Nairobi.

Your departure time will be agreed with your guide according to your hotel drop-off or flight schedule. Lunch is arranged along the journey.

The safari ends with a drop-off at your Nairobi hotel or Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, as confirmed in your booking. Share your onward flight details before confirmation so that an appropriate travel buffer can be planned.

For an early onward departure, an additional night in Nairobi may be necessary.

Accommodation: Not included; Nairobi hotel available on request
Meals: Breakfast and lunch
Main Activity: Optional final game drive, depending on departure requirements

Where You Stay—and Why We Selected These Properties

Mara Serena Safari Lodge — Masai Mara | 2 Nights

Set on a hill inside the Mara Triangle, Mara Serena combines expansive savannah views with access to wildlife-viewing routes within this part of the reserve. We propose it for your two-night stay to combine a full Mara safari day with comfortable surroundings between outings; journeys to particular sightings still depend on distance and wildlife movements.

Room included:  Standard Double
Meal plan: Full board
Families: Interconnecting rooms, extra beds and baby cots can be requested, subject to availability and confirmed occupancy.

The Cliff — Lake Nakuru | 1 Night

The Cliff

Located inside Lake Nakuru National Park, The Cliff offers tented suites overlooking the lake from an elevated volcanic cliff. We propose it for its distinctive lake views and in-park setting, allowing your overnight stay to complement the rhino-viewing and birdwatching experience without returning to accommodation in Nakuru town.

Room included: double/twin configuration
Meal plan: Full board
Families: Child eligibility and room occupancy must be confirmed before booking. A suitable alternative will be proposed where the property’s age policy does not accommodate your children.

Amboseli Serena Safari Lodge — Amboseli | 2 Nights

Situated inside Amboseli National Park, Amboseli Serena provides a practical base for early wildlife outings and returning to the lodge for a midday break. We propose it for your two-night stay because this arrangement supports both elephant viewing and a more flexible full safari day after the long transfer from Lake Nakuru.

Room included:  Standard King
Meal plan: Full board
Families: Family, interconnecting and triple-room options can be requested; the exact arrangement and any additional cost will be confirmed in your quotation.

Accommodation Confirmation

Your quotation identifies the exact properties, room categories, bed configurations and meal plans included in your price. Family rooms, interconnecting rooms and upgrades are confirmed individually rather than assumed to be included. If a proposed property is unavailable or unsuitable for your party, we will discuss an alternative and any price difference before booking.

Best Time for This Safari

This safari can be arranged throughout the year. Choose your dates according to your wildlife interests, weather preferences and accommodation budget.

Travel Period What to Expect Planning Consideration
January–February Generally warm conditions and rewarding resident wildlife viewing A useful option for a safari focused on all three parks
March–May The transition into the long rains, greener scenery and potentially wet roads Allow flexibility; rainfall and lodge availability vary
June–October Generally drier conditions; the Mara migration period typically falls around July–October Book preferred lodges early for migration-season travel
November–December Possible short rains, greener landscapes and continued resident-wildlife viewing Check festive supplements and availability

These are broad seasonal patterns rather than weather forecasts. The Mara’s migration timing varies, with July–October commonly identified as the main viewing window. Useful Information

For migration-focused travel, consider July–October. For a varied wildlife safari, choose dates that balance accommodation availability, weather and budget; the itinerary does not depend on migration sightings.

Wildlife You May See

Destination Main Wildlife Interests
Masai Mara Lions, elephants, buffaloes, giraffes, zebras and plains game; possible cheetah and leopard sightings
Lake Nakuru Black and white rhinos, buffaloes, giraffes, antelopes and varied birdlife
Amboseli Elephant herds, plains wildlife and birds around wetlands, with Kilimanjaro views when skies are clear

Lake Nakuru is a sanctuary for both black and white rhinos, while Amboseli’s varied habitats support wildlife and birdwatching. Kenya Wildlife Service

Important Wildlife Expectations

  • Big Five: This route offers opportunities to search for the Big Five, but seeing all five is not guaranteed.
  • Great Migration: Herd locations and river crossings depend on rainfall, grazing and animal movements.
  • Flamingos: Numbers at Lake Nakuru vary; large flocks should not be promised.
  • Mount Kilimanjaro: Visibility depends on cloud cover and weather.
  • Game drives: Your guide adjusts routes to current conditions, wildlife activity and available time.

Expert Guide Insights for This Safari

Your guide helps you understand wildlife behaviour and plans game drives around current sightings, road conditions and your interests.

  • Use your full Mara day well: Discuss whether you prefer predators, photography or general wildlife viewing. A picnic lunch allows you to explore farther without returning to the lodge at midday.
  • Give Nakuru’s rhinos time: Rather than rushing between sightings, spend time observing their behaviour. Birdlife and woodland habitats add variety beyond the lakeshore.
  • Keep the Nakuru–Amboseli transfer realistic: Leave early and allow for comfort stops. Treat any arrival-day game drive as dependent on the time available.
  • Prioritise an early Amboseli outing: Cooler conditions and softer light can enhance wildlife viewing and photography. Kilimanjaro views remain weather-dependent.
  • Balance full-day drives with rest: Families may prefer morning and afternoon outings with a lodge break. Agree the plan with your guide the evening before.
  • Allow sightings to develop: Patient observation can be more rewarding than repeatedly changing locations. Your guide will position the vehicle while respecting wildlife, other visitors and park rules.

Frequently Asked Questions About This 6-Day Kenya Safari

1. How much does the safari cost?

The price depends on your travel dates, number of travellers, room arrangements and selected accommodation. The advertised starting rate applies to the group size and season stated beside the price. Request a quotation showing your total cost, named lodges and confirmed inclusions.

2. Is this a private or group-joining safari?

This is a private safari. Your 4×4 Land Cruiser and professional safari driver-guide are reserved exclusively for your booking party. You will not share the vehicle with unrelated travellers.

3. What is the route and how many nights are spent in each park?

The proposed route is Nairobi → Masai Mara → Lake Nakuru → Amboseli → Nairobi, with two nights in Masai Mara, one night at Lake Nakuru and two nights in Amboseli. This provides a full wildlife-viewing day in both the Mara and Amboseli.

4. Are park fees, meals and game drives included?

The proposed package includes park entry fees for the confirmed itinerary, five nights’ accommodation, meals from Day 1 lunch through Day 6 lunch, private road transport and the scheduled game drives. Optional activities, drinks and personal expenses are excluded unless expressly included in your written quotation.

5. Which accommodation will we stay in?

The proposed properties are Mara Serena Safari Lodge, The Cliff at Lake Nakuru and Amboseli Serena Safari Lodge. Availability must be checked for your dates. Your quotation identifies the exact properties, room categories and meal plans. Any alternative accommodation and price difference will be discussed before confirmation.

6. Can children join this safari?

Yes. The private format allows families to discuss suitable game-drive lengths, comfort stops and meal arrangements with their guide. Child prices depend on age, room sharing and the selected properties’ policies. Please provide each child’s age at the time of travel when requesting your quote.

7. How much road travel is involved?

Several days involve substantial road journeys, particularly Lake Nakuru to Amboseli. Travel times depend on your accommodation locations, traffic, stops and road conditions. Transfer days have less game-viewing time, and an afternoon drive is possible only if arrival time permits.

8. Are flights between the parks included?

No. The base itinerary is a road safari, and domestic flights are excluded. If you prefer a flight upgrade, we can investigate a revised itinerary and quote the flights, airstrip transfers and any additional vehicle arrangements separately.

9. Can you collect us from Nairobi airport?

Airport pickup can be arranged as part of the agreed Nairobi pickup arrangements. Share your flight number and arrival time before booking. An arrival that does not allow a practical safari departure may require an overnight stay in Nairobi, quoted separately.

10. Can we fly out of Nairobi on the final day?

A same-day onward flight may be possible, depending on its departure time and the planned return from Amboseli. Share your flight details before confirmation so we can assess the journey and allow a suitable buffer. An early flight may require returning the previous day or adding a Nairobi overnight stay.

11. Can we continue to Diani or Zanzibar after the safari?

Yes. A beach extension can be arranged with a revised itinerary and quotation. Flights, airport transfers and beach accommodation are charged separately unless included in your confirmed package. Ask us to review the connections before booking your onward travel.

12. Can we customise the safari?

Yes. You can request different accommodation, additional nights, a revised route or optional activities. Changes may affect the price and travel arrangements. Your final itinerary and quotation will show the agreed package before you confirm your booking.
