1. A Private Guide and Vehicle for Your Family

2. Game Drives Adapted to Your Children

Discuss each day’s wildlife activities with your guide, taking your children’s ages, interests and energy levels into account. Game-drive days allow flexibility for breaks and shorter outings, while transfer days follow the route and park schedules.

3. More Time Together, Fewer Accommodation Changes

4. Family Rooms and Meals That Suit You

Share family rooms throughout your safari, keeping everyone together after each day’s adventures. Dietary requirements can be catered for—tell us about allergies, preferences and children’s meal needs when booking so arrangements are made in advance.

5. Time to Rest Between Adventures

Begin with an arrival night in Arusha and enjoy opportunities to relax at your accommodation between wildlife outings. All selected properties offer supervised swimming pools, giving families another way to unwind. Parents or guardians must remain responsible for their children around the pool.

Detailed 8 Days Tanzania Family Safari Itinerary

Day 1: Welcome to Tanzania – Airport Transfer to Arusha

Ngorongoro Family safari vehicle overlooking Ngorongoro CraterYour Tanzania family safari begins with a welcome at Kilimanjaro International Airport, where your driver meets you for the transfer to Rivertrees Country Inn. The journey usually takes approximately one hour, depending on traffic. After checking into your family room, take the rest of the day at your own pace. Children can stretch their legs while you settle in, enjoy the gardens or spend time together beside the swimming pool. Your safari briefing introduces the route and provides an opportunity to discuss meal requirements, children’s interests and practical arrangements. Keep today relaxed, particularly after an overnight international flight, so everyone can rest before tomorrow’s first wildlife adventure.

Overnight: Rivertrees Country Inn, Arusha
Meals: Bed-and-breakfast stay; lunch and dinner at your own expense. Arrival-day breakfast depends on arrival time.

Day 2: Arusha to Tarangire National Park – Your First Wildlife Encounters

After breakfast, meet your private guide and set off for Tarangire National Park. Allow approximately two to three hours to reach the park entrance, with timing affected by traffic and stops. Once inside, your first game drive introduces the family to baobab landscapes, open woodland and the Tarangire River. Look for elephants, giraffes, zebras and antelopes while your guide explains how different animals find food and water. Enjoy a picnic lunch at a designated site, with time for a comfortable break. Continue exploring before leaving the park for Burunge Tented Lodge. Settle into your family accommodation, enjoy dinner and share your favourite sightings from the first day on safari.

Overnight: Burunge Tented Lodge
Meals: Breakfast, picnic lunch & dinner

Day 3: Discover Tarangire – Wildlife Viewing at Your Family’s Pace

Wildebeest Crossing SafariSpend another day discovering Tarangire without packing or changing accommodation. After breakfast, return to the park with your guide and explore habitats you may not have visited yesterday. Watch for elephant family groups, scan the trees for birds and look closely at termite mounds and animal tracks. Your guide can make the experience engaging for children through questions and simple wildlife identification. Plan the outing around your family’s energy levels, choosing a shorter visit or a longer exploration with a picnic lunch. Returning to the lodge requires leaving the park, so discuss the day’s schedule before departure. Later, relax together and enjoy pool time before dinner, subject to your return time.

Overnight: Burunge Tented Lodge
Meals: Breakfast, lunch & dinner

Day 4: Tarangire Area to Serengeti – Through the Ngorongoro Highlands

Following an early breakfast, leave Burunge and travel towards Serengeti National Park through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. This is one of the itinerary’s longest journeys: allow approximately six to eight hours to reach Central Serengeti, potentially longer with entrance formalities, road conditions and wildlife stops. Your guide plans practical breaks along the way, including a picnic lunch. Watch the scenery change from cultivated countryside and highland slopes to broad grasslands. After entering Serengeti, look for wildlife as you continue towards Serengeti Queen Camp. Today combines a substantial road transfer with introductory game viewing, so arrival time varies. Settle into your family room, enjoy dinner and rest before two full days of Serengeti exploration.

Overnight: Serengeti Queen Camp
Meals: Breakfast, picnic lunch & dinner

Day 5: Serengeti Family Safari – Big-Cat Searches and Open Plains

Wake to the sounds of the bush and discuss the day’s programme with your guide. You may choose an early wildlife outing followed by breakfast, or breakfast before setting off. Explore Central Serengeti’s grasslands, river corridors and rocky outcrops, looking for lions, cheetahs, leopards and the many grazing animals that share their habitat. Sightings depend on wildlife movements and conditions, making patience part of the adventure. Your private vehicle allows time for the animals and questions that interest your family most. Depending on the distances covered, arrange separate outings with a camp break or take a picnic lunch for a longer drive. Return for dinner and another night in the same accommodation.

Overnight: Serengeti Queen Camp
Meals: Breakfast, lunch & dinner

Day 6: Another Day in Serengeti – Explore, Learn and Enjoy

Experienced safari guide during guided Kenya safari tourEnjoy a second full day in Serengeti, giving your family time to appreciate more than the headline sightings. Your guide selects the route according to recent wildlife activity, weather and your interests. Spend time watching giraffes browse, identifying antelopes or observing how birds and smaller animals fit into the ecosystem. Children may enjoy keeping a wildlife checklist and comparing today’s discoveries with yesterday’s encounters. Choose a longer outing with a picnic lunch or a shorter programme where the distance from camp permits a return for rest. Migration viewing depends on the season and the herds’ location; it is not a fixed feature of this Central Serengeti stay. Enjoy your final evening at camp.

Overnight: Serengeti Queen Camp
Meals: Breakfast, lunch & dinner

Day 7: Serengeti to Ngorongoro Crater – Wildlife on the Crater Floor

Depart early with packed meals for the journey towards Ngorongoro Crater. This is a demanding day, combining several hours of road travel, entry formalities and a crater game drive. Your guide keeps incidental wildlife stops brief to protect time for the descent. Once on the crater floor, explore grasslands, wetland areas and woodland in search of zebras, buffaloes, hippos, lions and possibly black rhinos. Stop for a picnic at a designated site before continuing your wildlife viewing within the permitted visit period. Later, ascend the crater road and continue to Tloma Lodge in Karatu. Dinner and a comfortable family room provide a welcome opportunity to unwind after an eventful day.

Overnight: Tloma Lodge
Meals: Breakfast, picnic lunch & dinner

Day 8: Karatu to Arusha or Kilimanjaro Airport – Farewell Tanzania

Enjoy breakfast at Tloma Lodge before beginning the return journey. Depending on your flight schedule, there may be time for a relaxed morning at the property before departure. Allow approximately three to four hours to Arusha, or four to five hours to Kilimanjaro International Airport, with additional time for traffic, breaks and airport check-in. Your transfer departure is arranged around your onward travel, so an evening flight generally provides a more comfortable finish to this road itinerary. Along the way, reflect on the landscapes, wildlife and shared discoveries of your Tanzania family safari. Your journey ends with a drop-off in Arusha or at Kilimanjaro International Airport.

Overnight: None

Private Safari Vehicle & Travel Times

Each traveller has a window seat, with a maximum of seven passengers per vehicle. Children have their own seats; please request any child restraint when booking so suitability and availability can be checked.

The route includes paved roads, rough park tracks and longer transfers. Your guide plans meal, toilet and stretching breaks at suitable locations. Outside designated areas, wildlife viewing takes place from the vehicle.

Karatu → Arusha 3–4 hours

These are planning estimates. Road conditions, entrance procedures, breaks and wildlife stops affect arrival times. Days 4 and 7 are the longest travel days, while the consecutive nights in Tarangire and Serengeti provide more flexibility between transfers.

Travelling With Children

Meals Planned Around Your Family

Tell us about dietary requirements, allergies and children’s meal preferences when booking. We coordinate requests with the accommodations, including picnic meals on longer outings. For severe allergies, discuss preparation arrangements before confirming your trip. Bring familiar snacks for children, particularly for transfer days.

Child Seats Requested in Advance

Provide each child’s age, height and approximate weight when requesting a child seat or booster. We will check the appropriate restraint, vehicle compatibility and availability before confirming the arrangement. Include the request at the quotation stage.

Supervision at Lodges and Camps

Parents or guardians remain responsible for their children throughout the safari. All selected accommodations have supervised swimming pools, but children must also remain under their family’s supervision. Follow staff guidance around the grounds and use an escort whenever the camp requires one, particularly after dark.

Family Rooms and Time to Relax

Family rooms keep everyone together, with the bedding arrangement specified in your quotation. Two nights at Burunge Tented Lodge and three at Serengeti Queen Camp reduce packing and allow time to settle in. Pool time depends on your daily programme, weather and property operating hours.

A Pace That Recognises Children’s Needs

Discuss departure times and outing lengths with your guide. On the full game-drive days, activities can be adjusted around attention spans, interests and rest needs, within park rules and practical driving distances. Transfer days offer less flexibility, so prepare children for the longer journeys and keep essentials within reach.

Best Time for a Tanzania Family Safari

June to October is a strong choice for this route, particularly for Tarangire, where dry-season wildlife gathers around remaining water sources. Families who prefer greener scenery and birdlife may also enjoy the wetter months, allowing more flexibility for showers and road conditions.

Travel Period Seasonal Conditions & Wildlife Family Planning Considerations
January–February Often a relatively dry interval, with green scenery. Seasonal calving draws attention to the southern Serengeti ecosystem. An option for some school half-term breaks. A dedicated Ndutu calving itinerary requires changes to this Central Serengeti route.
March–May The long-rain season can bring muddy tracks and slower journeys, particularly in April and May. Easter dates vary between 2027 and 2028. Allow flexibility and prioritise suitable accommodation access.
June–October Generally drier conditions and rewarding wildlife viewing; Tarangire’s river becomes especially important to animals. A practical choice for many summer school holidays. Reserve family rooms early, especially for July and August.
November–December Short rains may bring greener landscapes and seasonal birdlife, with conditions varying between locations. Consider November breaks or festive travel. Request Christmas and New Year availability early.

Seasonal patterns vary each year. Tanzania’s tourism guidance highlights both the popular dry-season migration period and the greener November–March months, when birdlife and newborn animals can add interest.

School Holidays & Migration Expectations

Share your school’s exact holiday dates when enquiring, as calendars differ by country and school. Include arrival and departure days when calculating the time available.

This itinerary stays in Central Serengeti. Northern Serengeti river crossings and southern Ndutu calving experiences require season-specific routing and accommodation changes. Migration movements depend on rainfall and grazing, and particular sightings cannot be guaranteed.

Optional Family Experiences

Personalise your Tanzania family safari with an additional experience or a beach extension. All options below cost extra and depend on availability, your children’s ages and the itinerary’s timing. Any additional charges are itemised in your quotation before booking.

Experience What to Expect Age & Availability Conditions Additional Cost
Serengeti Balloon Safari An early-morning balloon flight offering a different perspective over the plains Operator minimum-age, height and participation requirements apply; weather-dependent. Children’s eligibility must be checked before booking Quoted separately per eligible participant
Mto wa Mbu Cultural Visit A guided introduction to local livelihoods, food and community life Walking distance and duration tailored to the family; requires a suitable stop or adjustment to the transfer programme Quoted according to group size and activities
Karatu Farm or Garden Visit A gentle opportunity to learn about local crops and growing practices Subject to the host’s availability; children accompanied by an adult. Best considered on Day 8 when flight timings allow Quoted separately, including any transport
Zanzibar Family Beach Extension Additional nights beside the Indian Ocean after your wildlife safari Requires extra travel days; room arrangements and excursion restrictions depend on the selected property and operator Flights, accommodation, transfers and activities quoted separately

Optional activities replace part of the day’s free time or require a programme adjustment. They are not automatically added to the longer transfer days.

Tanzania Family Safari FAQs

1. Is this a private safari exclusively for our family?

Yes. Your family has its own 4×4 Land Cruiser and dedicated safari driver-guide. You will not share the safari vehicle with unrelated travellers. Each passenger has a window seat, with a maximum of seven passengers per vehicle.

2. How much does the eight-day Tanzania family safari cost?

The safari starts from USD 3,475 per adult, based on two adults travelling with children and sharing family rooms. Children aged 3–11.99 years pay from USD 1,340, while those aged 12–17.99 years pay from USD 2,145. Children under three travel free. Your quotation specifies the price for your dates and room arrangements.

3. Can we travel with a baby or toddler?

Please share your child’s age and daily needs before booking. This road itinerary includes long transfers, rough tracks and early departures, so suitability depends on your family’s circumstances. We can discuss changes to the route, accommodation and daily programme before you decide.

4. Will we all stay in the same family room?

Each family room accommodates up to two adults and two children, with two beds: one for parents and one shared by the children. Baby cots are available on request, and there is no minimum age for children sharing with their parents. Families exceeding this room capacity are allocated two rooms, with arrangements and any additional cost specified in their quotation.

5. How long are the drives, and can we take breaks?

Days 4 and 7 involve the most travel. Other safari days allow greater flexibility for shorter outings and rest. Your guide arranges breaks at suitable locations, although park rules, distances and entry schedules affect where and when you can stop.

6. Can you arrange a child seat or booster?

Request one when enquiring and provide your child’s age, height and approximate weight. Availability, suitability and compatibility with the safari vehicle must be checked before the arrangement is confirmed.

7. Can dietary requirements and children’s meals be arranged?

Yes, with advance notice. Share allergies, intolerances, religious requirements and meal preferences when booking. Severe allergies require a specific discussion with the accommodations about preparation arrangements before confirmation.

8. Do the accommodations have swimming pools and childcare?

All selected properties have supervised swimming pools, as arranged for this package. Parents or guardians must also supervise their children. Pool supervision does not constitute childcare, and babysitting is not included in the safari.

9. Are airport transfers included, and which departure flight should we choose?

Arrival and departure transfers through Kilimanjaro International Airport are included in the published itinerary. An evening departure generally allows a more comfortable return from Karatu on Day 8. Share your proposed flights before purchasing them so transfer timing can be checked.

10. Can we add Zanzibar or change the safari?

Yes. You can request a beach extension, different accommodation or a revised route. Changes are priced separately and depend on availability. A Zanzibar extension requires additional days beyond this eight-day wildlife safari.
