Tsavo East Park
Tsavo East is one of the largest game reserves in Africa, situated mid-way between Nairobi and Mombasa. This park is 11,747 square kilometers. And its elevation rises to 1,200 meters above sea level. The Tsavo River flows easterly through the park and serves as the park’s namesake. The national park is comprised of grasslands and savanna and riverbeds created by the Tsavo and Athi rivers which combine into the Galana River. Tsavo East is the largest protected area in Kenya, a land of unparalleled biodiversity and naturally home to Africa’s “Big Five” – black rhino, Cape buffalo, elephant, leopard, and of course, lion. But on your game drives here you can also come upon eland, gerenuk, impala and Masai giraffe. And the birds! Over 500 species like the black kite, lovebird and sacred ibis await your discovery. Here, too, the land calls out to be explored. You can traverse the Yatta Plateau, at 300 kilometers, the world’s longest lava flow. And it’s not all rugged plains that meet the eye – the Galana River flowing through the park creates a lush line of greenery cutting across the dusty savannah. You’ll find pods of hippos, crocodile and waterbuck adding to the diversity in this unpredictable reserve. Wildlife is not the only draw into Tsavo East. Visitors can also look forward to seeing Lugard Falls which a collection of rapids is cascading over some rough terrain. Additionally, there is the Yatta Plateau which delivers the longest lava flow in the world. Mudanda Rock is a scenic lookout which provides great views of elephant and other animals that come to drink water during the dry season. Things to do at the park – Game drives, bush walks, hiking and rock climbing, horse riding.
The Tsavo East National Park has a moderate climate as it is located close to the equator. The temperatures range between 20 and 30 °C. There are two wet seasons, the long rains between March and April and the short rains between November and December. The park is open year-round and always accessible.
