Tarangire National Park

Location: Tarangire National Park is the sixth largest national park in Tanzania with the greatest concentration of wildlife outside the Serengeti ecosystem. The Tarangire National Park is located between the meadows of Masai Steppe to the south east and the lakes of the Great Rift Valley to the north and west. It occupies an area of 2,600 square kilometers. Tarangire is located about 120 kilometers south east of Manyara
Wildlife: There are herds of up to 300 elephants, migratory wildebeest, zebra, buffalo, impala, fringe-eared Oryx and long-necked gerenuk, eland, giraffes, Bohor reedbuck, Thompson’s gazelle, greater and lesser kudu and the Coke’s hartebeest. Other common resident animals include waterbuck, giraffe, dik dik, impala, vervet monkey, banded mongoose, and olive baboon. Predators in Tarangire include African lion, leopard, cheetah, caracal, honey badger, and African wild dog, few black rhinos and hyenas. There are also over 500 bird species that have been identified here including yellow collared, and starlings.
Climate: Weather in Tarangire is temperate and enjoyable and over the year, temperatures do not change much. It rarely gets too hot; temperatures are about 26°C/79°F during the day, but the evenings and mornings tend to get cold temperatures dropping to about 14°C/57°F between June and October which is the dry season.
Wet seasons consist of ‘long rains’ (March to May) and the ‘short rains’ (November to December, with moderate temperatures. Afternoon temperatures are usually around 28°C/82°F, and night temperatures are around 16°C/61°F.

Activities: walk safaris, game drives, birding, and visiting Masaai or Barabaig village with numerous ancient paintings.

• The oldest known elephant to give birth to twins is found in Tarangire
