5 Days Tanzania Migration Safari Overview

Explore Northern and Central Serengeti on a private five-day migration safari from Arusha, combining three nights at Gnu Mara River Camp with a final night at Serengeti Queen Camp. Your private 4×4 safari Land Cruiser allows your guide to plan wildlife viewing around your interests, road conditions and recent sightings.
The main focus is three nights in Northern Serengeti, giving you time to search for migrating wildebeest and zebra and explore areas around the Mara River. Staying several nights allows your guide to revisit promising locations as the herds move. River crossings remain unpredictable, with each day offering a different wildlife experience.
After your northern stay, continue towards Central Serengeti for one night at Serengeti Queen Camp, enjoying wildlife viewing along the route where time allows. This adds variety to your safari before the return journey to Arusha.
For travellers who prefer to reduce long road transfers, optional flights from Arusha to Serengeti and back can be arranged. Your fly-in itinerary will be adjusted around flight schedules and suitable airstrips, while retaining the planned accommodation wherever practical.
Safari Highlights – Northern Serengeti & Mara River

Detailed 5-Day Tanzania Migration Safari Itinerary

Day 1: Arusha to Northern Serengeti – Journey to Gnu Mara River Camp
Depart Arusha early in your private 4×4 safari Land Cruiser for the long journey to Northern Serengeti. This is primarily a transfer day, with a packed lunch stop and breaks along the route. After entering Serengeti National Park, watch for wildlife as you continue north, although dedicated game-drive time will depend on road conditions and your arrival schedule. Your guide will prioritise reaching camp within permitted travel hours. Arrive at Gnu Mara River Camp for dinner and a briefing about the next two days of migration exploration.
Overnight: Gnu Mara River Camp
Proposed meals: Lunch and dinner
Day’s focus: Long road transfer; wildlife viewing en route where time allows.
Day 2: Full-Day Northern Serengeti Migration Game Drive
After breakfast, set out with a packed lunch for a full day exploring Northern Serengeti. Your guide will choose the route using recent sightings and local conditions, searching for wildebeest and zebra herds across the surrounding plains. Where herd activity makes it worthwhile, spend time near the Mara River watching animals approach the banks. A crossing may happen suddenly or may not occur at all, so the day balances patient observation with wider wildlife exploration. Look for predators and other resident animals before returning to Gnu Mara River Camp for dinner.
Overnight: Gnu Mara River Camp
Proposed meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Day’s focus: Dedicated migration and wildlife game drive.
Day 3: Another Full Day in Northern Serengeti & the Mara River Area
Enjoy another full day in Northern Serengeti, giving your guide the flexibility to revisit productive areas or explore different habitats. Depending on the position of the herds, you may concentrate on migration routes, river approaches or nearby plains where predators could be active. Carry a picnic lunch to avoid returning to camp during the middle of the day. Your guide will explain the behaviour of the animals you encounter and adjust the pace to your interests. Return to Gnu Mara River Camp for your third night in the north.
Overnight: Gnu Mara River Camp
Proposed meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Day’s focus: Dedicated game drive guided by herd movements and sightings.
Day 4: Northern Serengeti to Central Serengeti – Serengeti Queen Camp
After breakfast, leave Gnu Mara River Camp and begin your journey towards Central Serengeti. Today combines an inter-camp transfer with wildlife viewing along the route, rather than a full day spent exploring one area. Your guide will select suitable stops while allowing enough time to reach Serengeti Queen Camp before evening. Enjoy a packed lunch during the journey and watch the landscape change as you travel south. If the schedule allows, explore wildlife areas near camp before checking in, settling into your accommodation and enjoying dinner.
Overnight: Serengeti Queen Camp
Proposed meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Day’s focus: Transfer to Central Serengeti with game viewing en route.
Day 5: Central Serengeti to Arusha – Return Journey
Following breakfast, depart Serengeti Queen Camp for your return journey to Arusha. Watch for wildlife as you travel towards the park exit, with any additional viewing dependent on the departure time and road conditions. This is primarily a return transfer day, so an extended morning game drive is not included in the planned schedule. Stop for a packed lunch and comfort breaks along the way before arriving in Arusha for drop-off at your agreed location. An overnight stay in Arusha is advisable before an early flight the following morning.
Overnight: Not included
Proposed meals: Breakfast and lunch
Day’s focus: Road transfer to Arusha, with wildlife viewing while exiting Serengeti.
Optional Arusha–Serengeti Return Flights
Prefer to spend less time on the road? Request a fly-in version of this private migration safari, with flights from Arusha to Serengeti and back.
The itinerary will be adjusted around flight schedules, suitable airstrips and camp transfers. Flights are quoted separately from the road safari prices below. Your quotation will specify flight costs, transfers, baggage allowance and any changes to the daily programme.

Safari Accommodation – Gnu Mara River Camp & Serengeti Queen Camp

Your four-night safari combines an extended stay in Northern Serengeti with a final night at Serengeti Queen Camp. Spending three consecutive nights at the northern camp reduces packing and gives you two full days to explore the region.
| Safari nights | Accommodation | Role in your itinerary |
|---|---|---|
| Nights 1–3 | Gnu Mara River Camp | Your base for Northern Serengeti migration searches and Mara River viewing opportunities |
| Night 4 | Serengeti Queen Camp | Your final Serengeti stay before the return journey to Arusha |
Gnu Mara River Camp – Three Nights
Stay at Gnu Mara River Camp for the first three nights of your Tanzania migration safari. Returning to the same camp after each full day allows you to settle in while your guide adjusts wildlife-viewing routes according to sightings and herd movements.
Your stay supports two full days in Northern Serengeti, with packed lunches planned when spending the day away from camp. The camp provides your overnight base; migration herds and river-crossing activity vary independently of accommodation location.
Serengeti Queen Camp – One Night
After your northern stay, continue to Serengeti Queen Camp for your fourth and final night. The journey combines a camp transfer with wildlife viewing along the route, subject to the time needed to reach camp.
Spend the evening relaxing after the drive before departing for Arusha the following morning. This overnight stop breaks the journey south from Northern Serengeti and adds variety to your accommodation experience.
Room Arrangements & Bathroom Facilities
The published prices are per person sharing accommodation. Request a double or twin arrangement when enquiring, and provide your preferred room allocation if travelling as a family or group.
A USD 410 single room supplement applies for sole occupancy across the four-night safari. Triple rooms, family arrangements and extra beds require confirmation.
Your quotation will specify the booked room or tent category, bedding arrangement and bathroom facilities at each camp. Any essential requirements should be confirmed before payment.
Safari Meal Plan
| Day | Proposed meals |
|---|---|
| Day 1 | Lunch and dinner |
| Days 2–4 | Breakfast, lunch and dinner |
| Day 5 | Breakfast and lunch |
Lunch may be served as a packed picnic during game drives and transfers. Please disclose dietary requirements and food allergies when enquiring so the camps can confirm suitable arrangements.
Safari Vehicles, Guides & Travel Style
Private 4×4 Safari Land Cruiser
This is a private Tanzania migration safari. Your 4×4 safari Land Cruiser is reserved for your party, with no unrelated travellers joining your road transfers or game drives.
The published price bands cover 2–6 people travelling together. For six travellers, request confirmation of the assigned vehicle’s passenger seating and luggage capacity. Larger parties require a separate transport quotation.
Your Safari Driver-Guide
Your driver-guide manages road journeys, game drives and the daily wildlife-viewing programme. In Northern Serengeti, routes are chosen according to recent sightings, herd movements, access conditions and park rules.
Private travel allows you to discuss your interests and preferred pace with your guide. Time at sightings remains subject to travel distances, park operating hours and the need to reach camp on schedule. Guiding language will be confirmed in your quotation.
Luggage & Vehicle Capacity
Bring compact, soft-sided bags to make efficient use of the vehicle’s luggage space. When enquiring, tell us about large suitcases, extensive camera equipment, mobility equipment or other bulky items.
Passenger numbers alone do not establish luggage capacity. Your final transport arrangements should account for both your party and its bags, especially when six people share one vehicle.
For the optional fly-in safari, the airline’s confirmed baggage allowance applies separately.
Game Drives & Transfer Days
Days 2 and 3 are dedicated Northern Serengeti game-drive days. Day 1 is a long transfer from Arusha, Day 4 combines an inter-camp transfer with wildlife viewing, and Day 5 focuses on returning to Arusha.
Wildlife may be seen during transfers, but these journeys offer less flexibility than full game-drive days. Travellers wishing to reduce road time can request the separately priced Arusha–Serengeti return-flight option.
Great Migration & Mara River Crossing Experiences
The main focus of this 5 Days Tanzania Migration Safari is exploring Northern Serengeti in search of migrating wildebeest and zebra. Your three nights at Gnu Mara River Camp provide two full days to explore the region, revisit promising locations and respond to changing sightings.
How Your Guide Searches for the Herds
Your guide combines knowledge of seasonal movements with recent sightings, observations during game drives and information exchanged with other guides. Routes adapt to the animals’ location, grazing conditions and accessible tracks.
Some drives may focus on large herds spread across the plains. Others may explore river approaches or surrounding habitats, with opportunities to look for predators and resident wildlife along the way.
What Mara River Viewing Involves
When herds gather near the Mara River, your guide will select a suitable permitted viewing position. Animals may approach the water, retreat, move along the bank or remain nearby for hours.
River viewing requires patience. Your guide will balance waiting with opportunities elsewhere, taking account of herd behaviour, your interests and the time needed to return to camp. Vehicles must give wildlife space and follow park rules.
Why River Crossings Cannot Be Guaranteed
Wildebeest do not cross according to a timetable. Rainfall, grazing, river conditions and the behaviour of the herd influence their movements. A large gathering beside the river does not mean a crossing is imminent.
Neither a crossing nor a particular wildlife sighting can be guaranteed. Three nights in the north give you more time to explore, while the wider Serengeti experience offers rewarding wildlife viewing beyond the river.
Best Time for This Tanzania Migration Safari
July–October is the main planning window for this Northern Serengeti itinerary. The timing of the herds’ arrival and departure varies each year, so travel dates should match the northern route rather than rely on the word “summer” alone.
| Travel period | Seasonal considerations | Suitability for this route |
|---|---|---|
| June | Herds may still be spread across central and western areas. Early arrivals in the north are possible towards late June. | Review the route carefully if migration viewing is your main priority. |
| July | Herds generally move into Northern Serengeti, although their arrival varies. | A suitable month, with flexibility particularly valuable early in July. |
| August–September | A core period for planning migration-focused stays in the north and exploring the Mara River area. | A strong seasonal match for three nights in Northern Serengeti. |
| October | Herds may remain in the north, while changing rainfall can encourage movement south. | Suitable, with greater attention to seasonal changes towards month-end. |
How June Differs From July–October
June is a transition month. Booking three nights in Northern Serengeti too early may place you away from the main migration concentrations. If your dates fall in June, discuss whether a central or western Serengeti emphasis would better suit your priorities.
For July–October departures, this itinerary places more time in the northern region. The month helps guide your planning; current conditions determine the daily game-drive routes.
Getting There, Transfers & Safari Logistics

Arrival in Tanzania & Your Arusha Starting Point
Your safari starts and ends in Arusha. For international arrivals, Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) is a practical gateway to Arusha. Arusha Airport (ARK) serves domestic and safari flights, including Serengeti connections.
Plan to arrive in Arusha at least one day before the road safari begins, allowing time to rest before the early departure. Airport transfers and accommodation before or after the safari are arranged separately unless expressly included in your quotation.
Road Safari From Arusha
Travel in a private 4×4 safari Land Cruiser, reserved for your party. The road programme follows this sequence:
Arusha → Gnu Mara River Camp, Northern Serengeti (3 nights) → Serengeti Queen Camp (1 night) → Arusha.
The first day is a substantial journey to Northern Serengeti. It should be treated as a transfer day, with wildlife viewing dependent on progress and arrival time.
| Journey | Approximate planning allowance* |
|---|---|
| Kilimanjaro Airport to Arusha | Around 1–1½ hours; traffic can extend the journey |
| Arusha to Northern Serengeti | A full travel day; allow roughly 10–12 hours or longer |
| Northern to Central Serengeti | Approximately 4–6 hours of travel, with extra time for wildlife stops |
| Central Serengeti to Arusha | Approximately 7–9 hours or longer, depending on stops and conditions |
These are broad planning estimates, not fixed transfer commitments. Exact camp locations, routing, gate procedures, road conditions and wildlife stops affect journey times. Your final schedule must allow arrival within permitted park travel hours.
Optional Flights to Serengeti & Back
You can request return flights between Arusha and Serengeti to reduce road travel. A practical arrangement to explore is flying into Kogatende Airstrip for the northern stay and returning from Seronera Airstrip after the final night, subject to camp access and flight availability.
Your fly-in quotation will confirm:
- Flight routing and operating schedule.
- Arrival and departure airstrips.
- Airstrip transfers and private safari vehicle arrangements.
- Baggage restrictions.
- Additional charges and changes to the itinerary.
Scheduled safari flights may make intermediate stops, so the total journey time depends on the booked service. Flights are additional to the published road safari prices.
Departure Arrangements
The road safari finishes with drop-off at your agreed location in Arusha. Because the final day involves a long drive, an overnight stay in Arusha provides a useful buffer before onward travel.
If you wish to depart Tanzania that evening, share your flight details before booking. We will assess the connection and quote any required airport transfer. The same applies to flight connections following a Serengeti–Arusha safari flight.
What to Pack for Your Migration Safari
Pack light for your five-day Serengeti migration safari, with comfortable clothing for cool mornings, warm afternoons and dusty road journeys.
| Packing essential | What to bring |
|---|---|
| Safari clothing | Lightweight shirts and trousers in neutral colours, plus a fleece or warm jacket for early starts |
| Weather protection | A light windproof or waterproof jacket |
| Footwear | Comfortable closed shoes and sandals for use at camp |
| Sun protection | Sunscreen, sunglasses and a secure, wide-brimmed hat |
| Binoculars | Ideally one pair per person for distant wildlife and river viewing |
| Camera equipment | Camera, suitable zoom lens, spare batteries, memory cards and a dustproof bag |
| Charging accessories | Phone charger, power bank and a suitable travel adaptor; confirm camp charging facilities |
| Personal essentials | Toiletries, insect repellent and your usual prescription medicines |
| Travel documents | Passport, booking confirmation, insurance details and flight information, where applicable |
| Day bag | A small bag for items you need during game drives |
Luggage for Road & Fly-In Safaris
Use compact, soft-sided bags to make efficient use of your Land Cruiser’s luggage space, especially when travelling as a party of five or six. Tell us in advance if you are bringing large suitcases or bulky camera equipment.
For the optional Serengeti flights, follow the baggage allowance confirmed for your booked airline. Check the total weight allowance, hand-luggage rules and bag-size restrictions before packing.
Why Book With African Paradise Safaris?
A Route With Three Nights in Northern Serengeti
This itinerary gives you three consecutive nights at Gnu Mara River Camp, providing two full days to explore the northern region. Your final night at Serengeti Queen Camp adds variety before returning to Arusha.
The programme clearly identifies full game-drive days and transfer days, helping you understand how your five days will be spent.
A Private Safari for Your Travelling Party
Your private 4×4 safari Land Cruiser is reserved for you and your companions. Discuss your wildlife interests and preferred pace with your guide, who can adjust viewing stops within the day’s route, park rules and travel schedule.
Guiding That Responds to Wildlife Movements
Migration viewing depends on finding the animals rather than following a fixed sightseeing timetable. Your guide uses local knowledge, recent sightings and conditions on the ground to choose suitable game-drive routes.
The aim is to make thoughtful use of your time while setting realistic expectations about migration movements and river crossings.
Clear Prices & Room Supplements
Compare published starting prices for two, three, four or five–six people travelling together, with the USD 410 single room supplement stated separately.

Frequently Asked Questions – 5 Days Tanzania Migration Safari
1. When is the best time for this migration safari?
July–October is the main travel window for this Northern Serengeti itinerary. Herd movements depend on rainfall and grazing, so their location varies each year. June departures require particular care because the main herds may still be farther south or west.
2. Are Mara River crossings guaranteed?
No. River crossings are unpredictable natural events. Herds may gather near the water without crossing, or move to another location. Your three nights in Northern Serengeti provide two full days to search for migration activity and explore surrounding wildlife areas.
3. Is this a private safari or a shared group departure?
This is a private safari. Your 4×4 safari Land Cruiser is reserved for your travelling party during road transfers and game drives. The price for 5–6 people applies to people booking and travelling together, rather than individuals joining an existing departure.
4. Where does the safari start and end?
The road safari starts and ends in Arusha, Tanzania. Collection and drop-off locations will be agreed before travel. Airport transfers and accommodation before or after the safari must be expressly included in your quotation.
5. How much does the private safari cost?
Starting prices are USD 2,700 per person for two travellers, USD 2,500 for three, USD 2,400 for four, and USD 2,300 for five or six, based on sharing accommodation.
Your quotation will confirm the applicable price for your dates, room arrangements and requested services.
6. Can I book a single room?
Yes, subject to availability. A USD 410 single room supplement applies for the four-night safari when travelling as part of a group.
For example, a traveller in a qualifying party of 5–6 people pays from USD 2,710 with single-room accommodation. A private departure for one traveller requires a separate quotation.
7. Which camps are included?
The itinerary includes three nights at Gnu Mara River Camp followed by one night at Serengeti Queen Camp. Your booking confirmation will specify room categories, bedding arrangements and bathroom facilities.
8. Can we fly to Serengeti instead of travelling by road?
Yes. Optional flights between Arusha and Serengeti are available at an additional cost. The fly-in programme will be adjusted around suitable airstrips, flight schedules and camp transfers.
Your quotation will confirm flight costs, baggage allowances, transfers and any itinerary changes. Scheduled flights may carry other passengers; your booked safari game drives remain private.
9. Which meals are included?
The planned meal schedule is lunch and dinner on Day 1; breakfast, lunch and dinner on Days 2–4; and breakfast and lunch on Day 5. Packed lunches may be provided during game drives and transfers.
The final meal plan and included drinks will be stated in your quotation. Please disclose dietary requirements and allergies before booking.
10. Are park fees and airport transfers included?
Your written quotation will itemise park entry fees, any applicable transit fees and airport transfers, clearly stating which are included in the total. Review this alongside the itinerary before paying your deposit.
11. How much driving does the itinerary involve?
The road programme includes a long transfer from Arusha to Northern Serengeti on Day 1 and a return journey from Central Serengeti on Day 5. Day 4 combines an inter-camp transfer with wildlife viewing.
Days 2 and 3 are dedicated Northern Serengeti game-drive days. Choose the separately priced flight option if reducing road travel is a priority.
12. Can we catch an international flight on the final day?
Share your flight details before booking so the connection can be assessed. The return drive is lengthy and arrival times can change. An overnight stay in Arusha after the road safari provides more flexibility before onward travel.
13. How do we book, and what conditions apply?
Send your preferred dates, traveller numbers, children’s ages where applicable, room preferences and choice of road or fly-in travel.
African Paradise Safaris will provide a quotation and booking terms covering availability, payment deadlines, cancellation charges, refunds and amendment conditions. Review these before paying. Accommodation and flights are subject to availability until confirmed.
