Detailed 7-Day Tanzania Family Safari Itinerary

Day 1: Arrive in Tanzania – Transfer to Arusha

best family safari in tanzania
8 Days Tanzania Family Safari

Welcome to Tanzania! Your African Paradise Safaris representative will meet your family at Kilimanjaro International Airport and transfer you to your accommodation in Arusha. The drive usually takes approximately 1–1.5 hours, depending on traffic and your hotel’s location.

Today is reserved for settling in after your flight. Relax in your family room, enjoy the gardens or accompany your children to the swimming pool. A baby cot can be arranged on request. Your safari guide will provide a briefing at a convenient time, discussing the route, daily routines and your family’s preferences. If you arrive late, the briefing can take place the following morning.

Travel time: Approximately 1–1.5 hours from Kilimanjaro Airport.
Overnight: Arusha — family-room accommodation.
Meals: Breakfast; arrival-day lunch and dinner at your own expense.

Overnight: Rivertrees Country Inn, Arusha area — family-room accommodation.

Day 2: Arusha to Tarangire National Park – Elephants & Baobab Landscapes

After breakfast, leave Arusha for Tarangire National Park, approximately 2–3 hours away. Your first game drive introduces the family to baobab trees, river valleys and wildlife-rich woodland. Look for elephants, giraffes, zebras and antelopes while your guide helps children identify animals and understand their behaviour.

Enjoy a picnic lunch at a designated site, with time to stretch before continuing your exploration. Game-drive stops will follow wildlife sightings and your family’s comfort, with toilet breaks at suitable facilities. In the afternoon, leave the park and drive to Karatu, where dinner and your family room await. Pool time will depend on your arrival hour and the property’s swimming hours.

Travel time: Approximately 2–3 hours to Tarangire; 1.5–2.5 hours onwards to Karatu, excluding game drives.
Overnight: Eileen’s Trees Inn, Karatu — family-room accommodation.

Meals: Breakfast, picnic lunch and dinner.

Day 3: Karatu to Central Serengeti – Through the Ngorongoro Highlands

Ngorongoro Family safari vehicle overlooking Ngorongoro CraterEnjoy breakfast before beginning the journey towards Serengeti National Park. Travel through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, where highland scenery gradually gives way to open plains. A crater-viewpoint stop may be possible, depending on weather, visibility and road conditions.

This is one of the itinerary’s longer travelling days, so your guide will plan suitable breaks along the route. Carry a packed lunch to enjoy at a designated stop before continuing through the Serengeti entrance formalities. Once inside the park, watch for wildlife as you travel towards your accommodation in the central region. The amount of afternoon game viewing depends on road conditions, gate procedures and your arrival time.

Travel time: Approximately 5–7 hours, including usual stops and gate formalities; wildlife viewing can extend the journey.

Overnight: Serengeti Queens Camp, Central Serengeti — family-room accommodation.

Meals: Breakfast, picnic lunch and dinner.

Day 4: Explore Central Serengeti – A Full Day of Family Wildlife Adventures

Spend today discovering the Serengeti with your private guide. An early start can offer rewarding wildlife viewing before the day becomes warmer. Search for lions, cheetahs, elephants, giraffes and other animals while learning how predators and grazing herds share this remarkable ecosystem.

Choose a picnic safari or discuss separate morning and afternoon drives with your guide, depending on your accommodation’s location and your children’s energy levels. Returning for lunch and a rest is practical only when the day’s wildlife-viewing area is within reasonable reach. Between sightings, children can enjoy spotting birds, identifying tracks and asking questions. Return to your accommodation with time to relax before dinner.

Travel time: Flexible game drives; approximately 4–6 hours in the vehicle, adjusted with your guide.

Overnight: Serengeti Queens Camp, Central Serengeti — family-room accommodation.

Meals: Breakfast, lunch or picnic lunch, and dinner.

Day 5: Serengeti to Karatu – Wildlife En Route & Return to Your Lodge

After breakfast, begin your return journey towards Karatu, looking for wildlife as you travel through the Serengeti. A short early game drive may be possible, provided it fits the day’s departure time and your family’s comfort. Your guide will balance wildlife stops with the substantial distance ahead.

Continue across the plains and through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, with a picnic lunch and suitable comfort stops along the way. Your arrival time in Karatu will depend on your departure time, road conditions, park formalities and wildlife stops. After checking in at Eileen’s Trees Inn, settle into your family room and relax before dinner. Swimming may be possible if you arrive before the pool closes, but afternoon pool time cannot be guaranteed.

Travel time: Approximately 5–7 hours, depending on accommodation location, stops and road conditions.

Overnight: Eileen’s Trees Inn, Karatu — family-room accommodation.

Meals: Breakfast, picnic lunch and dinner.

Day 6: Ngorongoro Crater Safari – Wildlife on the Caldera Floor

Leave Karatu early after breakfast, or with a packed breakfast, for your Ngorongoro Crater excursion. Drive through the highlands before descending to the crater floor, where grasslands, wetlands and woodland support a variety of wildlife.

Explore with your guide, looking for buffalo, zebras, wildebeest, hippos and lions. Black rhinos also live here, although sightings require patience and are never guaranteed. Enjoy a picnic lunch at a designated site, keeping food secure around wildlife. Your crater visit will follow the applicable permit conditions and your guide’s instructions. Afterwards, ascend the crater road and return to Karatu for a relaxed evening and your final safari dinner.

Travel time: Approximately 1.5–2.5 hours each way to the crater floor, plus around 4–5 hours exploring.

Overnight: Eileen’s Trees Inn, Karatu — family-room accommodation.

Meals: Breakfast, picnic lunch and dinner.

Day 7: Karatu to Arusha – Departure from Tanzania

Kenya Game drivesEnjoy breakfast before checking out and beginning the journey back towards Arusha. Travel through the northern Tanzanian countryside, with a suitable comfort stop along the way. Depending on your departure arrangements, enjoy lunch in Arusha or carry a packed lunch for the journey.

Your guide will transfer you to your agreed drop-off point in Arusha or continue to Kilimanjaro International Airport. An afternoon or evening flight is the most practical fit for this itinerary; your exact departure time should be checked before booking flights. For an early morning flight, the final night would need to be rearranged closer to the airport. Your family safari ends with your onward transfer.

Travel time: Approximately 3–4 hours to Arusha or 4–5 hours to Kilimanjaro Airport, allowing for traffic and stops.

Overnight: None included — departure transfer to Arusha or Kilimanjaro International Airport.

Meals: Breakfast and lunch.

Private Safari Vehicle & Family Travel Comfort

Experienced safari guide during guided Kenya safari tourYour family travels in a private 4×4 Land Cruiser with a pop-up roof, reserved exclusively for your booking. Your dedicated driver-guide accompanies you throughout the safari, helping with wildlife identification, route planning and suitable stops.

Seating & Wildlife Viewing

Each traveller has an allocated seat and window access, with a maximum of seven passengers per vehicle. Your family will not share the vehicle with unrelated safari guests.

The pop-up roof provides elevated wildlife viewing during game drives. Children must follow the guide’s instructions, remain secure while the vehicle is moving and avoid leaning outside. Seat belts should be worn whenever travelling.

Luggage & Pushchairs

Pack in soft-sided bags where possible, as luggage space depends on the number of passengers and the equipment carried. Keep a small day bag accessible for medication, sun protection, wipes and an extra layer.

Tell us before booking if you plan to bring a pushchair, large suitcases or other bulky equipment. A compact folding pushchair is easier to transport, although uneven paths and natural ground can limit its use at safari properties.

Comfort Stops & Child Seats

Your guide will plan toilet and stretching breaks at suitable facilities along the route. Facilities are more widely spaced in remote areas, so please tell the guide early when your children need a stop. Leaving the vehicle is permitted only where safe and allowed.

Request a child seat or booster when enquiring, providing each child’s age, height and approximate weight. We will confirm availability, vehicle compatibility and any additional charge before booking. If you prefer to bring your own seat, discuss fitting arrangements with us in advance.

Travelling With Children: Ages, Meals & Daily Pace

This private safari welcomes families travelling with children, including infants. The most suitable daily routine depends on your children’s ages, interests and tolerance for longer road journeys.

Children’s Ages & Safari Suitability

The itinerary includes substantial road travel on the journeys to and from Serengeti. Families with very young children should consider how comfortably they manage several hours in a vehicle, even with breaks.

Share your children’s ages and any mobility, medical or sensory needs before booking. We can discuss adjustments, additional nights or a separately priced flight option where these would improve the journey.

Meals & Dietary Requests

Full-board accommodation includes breakfast, lunch and dinner, with picnic lunches used on relevant safari days. Please advise us in advance about:

  • Food allergies or intolerances.
  • Vegetarian, vegan, halal or other dietary requirements.
  • Children’s meal preferences and preferred eating times.
  • Baby-food preparation or milk-storage needs.

We will discuss these requests with the properties and confirm what can be provided. For severe allergies, tell us about cross-contamination concerns before booking. Bring essential specialist foods, infant formula and any prescribed medication, as particular products may be difficult to obtain along the route.

Game Drives, Rest & Early Starts

Your guide will adapt wildlife stops and game-drive duration where the route allows. The full Serengeti day offers the most flexibility: a picnic outing or separate drives may be possible, depending on wildlife locations and the distance from camp.

Some days still require early departures, especially the Ngorongoro Crater visit and longer transfers. Rest time is built into the itinerary, but returning to the accommodation during a game drive is not always practical.

Activity Restrictions & Wildlife Safety

Optional activities have their own age, height, health and safety requirements. Balloon flights, guided walks and other excursions must be checked individually before they are added to your family’s booking.

Children must remain with an adult at accommodation properties and designated picnic areas. Never approach or feed wildlife, and leave the safari vehicle only when your guide confirms that it is permitted and safe.

Best Time for This Tanzania Family Safari

June to October is my first recommendation for families prioritising generally dry conditions, while January and February are also attractive options. This route can operate throughout the year, but rainfall, road conditions and school-holiday demand affect the experience.

Travel Period What to Expect Family Planning Advice
January–February Generally warmer conditions, with opportunities for rewarding wildlife viewing. Plan early starts, sun protection and regular drinking-water breaks.
March–May The main rainy season can bring muddy roads, heavier showers and longer transfers. Allow flexibility and prepare for wet-weather changes, particularly in April and May.
June–October Generally drier conditions make this a strong period for the northern circuit. Early mornings can be cool. Pack layers and secure family rooms early for school-holiday dates.
November–December Short rains can bring showers and greener scenery, although conditions vary each year. Carry lightweight waterproofs and book Christmas and New Year travel well ahead.

Tanzania’s usual rainfall pattern includes long rains around March–May and shorter rains later in the year. These are seasonal patterns rather than guaranteed forecasts.

School Holidays & Family-Room Availability

July–August, Christmas, New Year and Easter holiday periods deserve early planning. Family rooms are fewer than standard rooms, so securing the right sleeping arrangement across all three properties is an important part of confirming your safari.

Send your preferred dates and children’s ages before booking flights. We can check room availability and advise whether a small date adjustment would improve your options. Easter dates differ between 2027 and 2028, so use your school’s actual holiday calendar when planning.

Great Migration Expectations

This itinerary stays in Central Serengeti and focuses on varied wildlife viewing. It does not include a dedicated Northern Serengeti river-crossing expedition or a Southern Serengeti calving stay.

If migration viewing is your main priority, tell us before booking. We can recommend a seasonal route adjustment or extra nights. Herd locations depend on rainfall and grazing, and neither migration encounters nor river crossings can be guaranteed.

Optional Activities & Safari Extensions

Personalise your holiday with an additional experience or a longer stay. All options below cost extra and are excluded from the advertised safari price. We will provide the exact additional cost before you approve any change.

Optional Experience How It Fits Your Holiday Extra-Cost Basis
Guided Mto wa Mbu cultural visit A locally guided introduction to community life, scheduled around transfers and your children’s interests. Separate quotation covering guiding, activity fees and any additional transport or meal.
Maasai cultural visit An optional hosted visit to learn about local traditions, with photography agreed with your hosts. Separate quotation stating the visit fee and any vehicle detour.
Serengeti balloon safari An early-morning flight offering a different perspective on the plains, subject to weather and operator requirements. Additional per-person charge; the quotation will identify transfers, breakfast and applicable fees.
Serengeti flight upgrade An itinerary adjustment that replaces a substantial road journey with a scheduled flight where practical. Revised package quotation covering airfare, airstrip transfers and changes to vehicle arrangements.
Extra safari night More time in Serengeti or an additional rest night to ease the pace. Additional accommodation, meals, vehicle, guiding and relevant park fees.
Zanzibar beach extension Add three to five nights after the safari for beach relaxation and optional island excursions. Separate quotation covering flights, accommodation, transfers, meal plan and applicable local charges.

Choosing Activities for Children

Cultural visits can be kept short and arranged around your family’s interests. Walking components should be discussed in advance, particularly for younger children or anyone with limited mobility.

Balloon safaris have operator-specific age, height and fitness requirements. We will check eligibility for each family member before booking. If some family members do not fly, their morning arrangements must be agreed in advance.

Adding Zanzibar After Your Safari

A Zanzibar extension gives your family time to unwind after the wildlife journey. We can recommend accommodation according to your children’s ages, preferred room arrangement, beach location and meal plan.

Your extension quotation will clearly distinguish included services from optional excursions and charges payable locally. Flights and any non-refundable services will only be booked after you approve the arrangements.

What to Pack for Your Family Safari

Pack comfortable clothing, essential child-care supplies and a small day bag for items you need while travelling. Soft-sided luggage is recommended, with the final allowance discussed according to your family size and vehicle space.

Clothing & Footwear

  • Lightweight, breathable clothes for daytime.
  • Long-sleeved shirts and trousers for sun and evening coverage.
  • A fleece or warm jacket for early starts and the Ngorongoro highlands.
  • A lightweight waterproof jacket, especially during rainy periods.
  • Comfortable closed shoes and sandals for use at your accommodation.
  • Sun hats, sunglasses, swimwear and a change of clothes for younger children.

Essentials for Children

  • Sufficient nappies, wipes and nappy-disposal bags.
  • Familiar snacks and any specialist foods your child needs.
  • Infant formula, bottles and feeding equipment where applicable.
  • A favourite comfort toy, small books or quiet travel games.
  • A compact folding pushchair if needed, with space agreed before travel.
  • A requested child seat or booster, with suitability confirmed before booking.

Personal Care & Medication

  • Sunscreen and insect repellent suitable for each family member.
  • Personal toiletries and hand sanitiser.
  • Prescription medicines in their original packaging, carried in your day bag.
  • Any prescribed allergy medication and written care instructions.
  • A small personal first-aid kit.

Seek individual pre-travel health advice for your family before departure, particularly when travelling with infants or children who have medical needs.

Documents & Electronics

  • Passports and the entry documents required for your nationality.
  • Travel-insurance details and emergency contact numbers.
  • Copies of your itinerary, flight details and booking confirmation.
  • A camera, spare batteries and binoculars if you have them.
  • Charging cables, a power bank and a suitable travel adaptor.

Keep a Day Bag Within Reach

Carry drinking water, medication, wipes, sun protection, an extra layer and children’s essentials in the passenger area. Main luggage may be difficult to access during the journey.

If you add a domestic flight, use the baggage allowance stated on your confirmed ticket; do not assume the road-safari luggage arrangements also apply to the aircraft.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Is this safari private, or will we share with other travellers?

This is a private family safari. Your vehicle and driver-guide are reserved exclusively for your family throughout the itinerary.

2. Does the seven-day itinerary include our arrival day?

Yes. The package includes seven days and six nights, starting with your arrival and overnight stay near Arusha. Wildlife activities begin on Day 2.

3. Can we book this safari with a baby or toddler?

Yes. Children below three travel free when accompanying two paying adults under the advertised arrangements. However, the Serengeti journeys involve long road transfers. Tell us your child’s age so we can discuss the daily pace, cot requirements and suitable child-seat arrangements before booking.

4. Will our children sleep in the same room as us?

Family rooms are arranged for up to two adults and two children, using a parents’ bed and a bed shared by the children. Baby cots are available on request. If your children need separate beds or your family requires additional rooms, we will confirm suitable arrangements and any price difference before booking.

5. What happens if our child turns 12 or 17 before the safari?

Prices are based on each traveller’s age on the safari start date. Children aged 12–16.99 pay USD 1,795 each, while travellers aged 17 and above pay the adult rate. Please provide accurate ages when requesting your quotation.

6. Can we shorten a game drive if the children become tired?

Your guide can adjust game-drive duration where practical. Returning early is easier on the full Serengeti day than during transfers between destinations. Tell your guide how your children are feeling so the day can be managed around their needs.

7. Can you accommodate food allergies or special diets?

Please provide dietary requirements before booking. We will check arrangements with each property and explain any limitations, particularly for severe allergies or cross-contamination concerns. Bring essential specialist foods that your children rely on.

8. Will we see the Big Five or the Great Migration?

The route offers opportunities to search for the Big Five, but no wildlife sighting is guaranteed. This package stays in Central Serengeti. Dedicated river-crossing or calving-season trips may require different accommodation, a revised route or extra nights.

9. What time should we book our departure flight?

An afternoon or evening departure from Kilimanjaro International Airport is the most practical fit for the final-day drive from Karatu. Send us your proposed flight before purchasing it so we can check the timing. An early morning departure requires a change to the final overnight arrangements.

10. Can we add flights or a Zanzibar beach stay?

Yes. We can prepare a revised quotation for a Serengeti flight option, extra safari nights or a Zanzibar extension. These services cost extra and are booked only after you approve the arrangements.

11. What happens if we need to cancel or change our dates?

Contact us as soon as your plans change. Available options and charges depend on the notice given, accommodation conditions and any flights or activities already booked. Your written booking terms will explain the applicable cancellation and amendment conditions before you pay a deposit.

12. Are insurance and tips included?

Travel insurance, medical treatment, emergency evacuation costs and gratuities are excluded. Arrange insurance covering your family’s planned activities, medical needs and cancellation risks. Tips are discretionary and can be given according to your satisfaction with the service.

Related Tanzania Family Safari Packages

Compare these private family safaris according to your children’s ages, available holiday time and comfort with longer road journeys.

5 Days Tanzania Family Safari

Choose this for a shorter safari without the long Serengeti road transfers. Explore Tarangire, Lake Manyara and Ngorongoro Crater, with three nights at one Karatu base. This is a useful alternative for families who prefer less time travelling between destinations.

8 Days Tanzania Family Safari

Choose this for more time exploring Tarangire and Serengeti. Spend two nights at Burunge Tented Lodge and three nights at Serengeti Queen Camp, allowing an additional Tarangire exploration day and two full Serengeti game-drive days. The route also includes Ngorongoro Crater, visited on the journey from Serengeti to Karatu. That combined transfer and crater day requires an early start and a longer day on the road.

Which safari suits your family? The five-day option avoids Serengeti’s longer transfers. This seven-day package includes two Serengeti nights and a separate crater excursion from Karatu. The eight-day option provides more wildlife time in Tarangire and Serengeti. Share your dates, children’s ages and preferred daily pace, and African Paradise Safaris will help you choose.
